A train adventure from the eyes of a city girl

Yesterday was my first solo ride on a train. Having to choose between being stuck in traffic for an hour or getting home in twenty minutes after work, I choose the latter. This meant I had to find my way to the station and hop on the correct train and get home. Simple enough right?

Well not exactly. Being a Colombo girl I wasn’t experienced in riding the train alone. I always relied on the bus or personal vehicle to get me to my destinations. And there was no need to go by train because I lived in a city and people who lived in the suburbs were the ones who usually took the train.

I made my way to the station and got myself a ticket home. I remember asking a lady if I was standing on the correct platform because the last thing I wanted was to miss that train. Having checked the schedule a million times I managed to sit on bench nearby until the train got there. It was a fidgety five minute wait and I did my best to portray an experienced ‘don’t mess with me’ attitude so that people wouldn’t sense my nervous-ness.

While waiting, another train zoomed past us vibrating the entire station with its power. It reminded me of people who commit suicide by jumping in front of oncoming trains. It shocked me to see how fast these beasts sped past stopping for no one. It was sort of an intimidating feeling.

Anyhow as my train drew closer people started strategically making their way onto the ledge of the platform. This was something I had to learn because if you observe close enough you would see which carriages are least full and where you need to stand, to get in and secure a place for yourself.

Even though I wasn’t quick enough as the others I managed to find a somewhat empty one and made my way onto the train.

The train started moving and all I could think was “Yes! I made it! Hurrah for myself!!” and also “Ok Roshane now watch out for the station you need to get down at” and again “Yay I did it!”.

We passed the deep blue sea and a line of fisherman huts and beach side restaurants before meeting my stop and the view managed to inspire me to write more as well. (watch out for my next story).

It may sound silly but the train ride was a huge deal for me. It made me be aware of my strength. It taught me to take courage and be independent. And that was a great life lesson even if it was a simple fifteen minute train ride!
