Skiing again: 14 years after I had an accident on an icy red slope

I don’t remember much of it. I was 12, and it was a sort of snow camp where I went with my little sister.

It was an icy red slope, and it happened after a turn. I couldn’t see it from where I was, but a group of people were having a break, sitting on the snow, right after the turn.

When I realized it, I tried to stop, started to slide on the icy snow, and the last thing I remember is my face hitting the ground.

It’s not about how physically injured I was. I think everything was fine after only 2 weeks.

It’s about how much it shocked the younger me, and how much it made me lose my confidence.

I never skied again after this event.

Until today.

Me after the 2nd run. Tired silly face, but happy and excited.

Clearly, this is not the story of this awesome athlete being severely injured, then spending years recovering until he comes back and win the Olympic Games.

It’s about the story of a random guy ending up scared of doing something he loved so much before because of an accident. And finally winning over his fear 14 years later. Because he decided he would do so.

It’s about something that any of you could decide to do, anytime.

The idea came to my mind while I was putting together this bucket list idea for 2018.

When I told my sister I would go back to France for a month after 9 months without seeing them, she quickly made up a program of what we could do (visiting dad, going to Bordeaux, visiting mom, etc.).

In the end, she added: “Oh, and we will probably go to visit our friends and ski there, in Haute Savoie.”

— Oh my god, I want to come!

That’s when I decided to add the item “Ski in France” to my bucket list. I had a great chance to face one of my fears, and I couldn’t ignore such an opportunity coming right at the moment I was choosing what to do in 2018.

The slopes we went are 45min from where I am staying here, next to the Annecy lake, in France.

We had a consistent lunch (based on potatoes, and cheese, and cream — french mountain style!), then had to pay for the slope access, then rend some skis and equipment.

I used to think skiing was very expensive, but it’s actually alright (there it’s around 40€ for skis, equipment and access for the whole day).

When we were on the chairlift to get on top of the slope, I said to my brother-in-law: “I am so scared, but so excited at the same time. And the view is amazing. Let’s fucking do this.”

Honestly, I felt like I wouldn’t manage to ride at least one slope when I first put on the skis.

But I was very surprised how well it went.

It took me only a few runs to feel confident again and remember how to do.

One interesting take away from this experience is that the very moment fear disappeared was when I started to ride the first slope.

When I told my sister I would do it, I was still scared.

When we arrived at the station, I was still scared.

When I was on the chairlift, I was still scared.

But when I went from “Omg, this is going to happen” to “Omg, this is actually happening”, the fear vanished.

It was just me, right there, and I was doing it.
