Airports are some of my favorite places (not kidding). As someone who tries to maximize both travel convenience but also affordability, I have nothing against longer layovers, even those involving a night. However, one major obstacle are the high costs (or major inconveniences) often involved with overnight stays.

There is really not a lot a budget- yet convenience-oriented traveler like me requires to be ok with an overnight layover: a clean room with a bed for 5–6 hours. It can be small and the room does not need to have windows. Even capsules/pods are ok. Accessible clean showers and restrooms. And the facilities should be located inside security, so that one doesn’t have to go through immigration.

Singapore’s Changi Airport, regularly voted the world’s best airport, is my favorite transit airport in the world for the very reason that exactly what I just described is offered at an amazing rate of around 40 USD for 6 hours.

This is the benchmark. But most airports (at least when it comes to Star Alliance hubs, which is only what I am familiar with — I know that Helsinki, a OneWorld hub, has sleeping pods) don’t even get close to this.

Instead, the typical situation looks like this: There is one extremely overpriced airport hotel nearby the airport in walking distance. But apart from ridiculously high prices, these still require passing through immigration, customs etc. For all other accommodation options, one has to take a cab or a taxi.

Are economical reasons preventing airports from providing this type of service? Space constraints? Or is this caused by a sheer lack of imagination or absence of willingness to innovate? I have no idea but I am thinking that any airport and even some airlines that manage to incentivize connecting passengers to arrive in the evening and continue in the morning, would benefit.

It’s a bit frustrating, to be honest. Because not every destination in the world is reachable via Singapore.
